Hello: Everything I've read tells me that the
11th TN was not at Shiloh, is that correct? Just want to have confirmation!
Thanks!

Emile,
You are correct. The 11th Tennessee was not at Shiloh. While the Battle of
Shiloh was going on, the 11th Tennessee was in operations around Cumberland
Gap.

I have been unable to find any information on
the strength on the 11th Tn at the battle of Chickamauga. I have complete access
to the offical records here in Washington Dc, but they dont show the strength of
the 11th. If anyone has info on the strength of the 11th Tenn at Chickamauga it
would be filling in a piece of the
puzzle.
Thank you very much,

Response: 11th Tennessee at Chickamauga

Todd Cathey
Although the exact strength of the 11th Tennessee Infantry at Chickamauga is
unknown, regimental returns from April, 1863 show a total of 436 men with
415 present for duty. Since the regiment was not engaged in battle from
April until September at Chickamauga, this should be a close estimate to
regimental strenth in that battle. We have no information to believe that
the 11th received any large influx of new recruits nor any high amounts of
discharges or desertions during this period.

A marker for Camp Cheatham is located at the crossroads of US 41 in
Springfield. The original camp is not at that location. Camp Cheatham is
located about a few miles north of Springfield, Robertson County, Tennessee.
It is still located on farmland and is along the banks of Spring Creek where
the railroad crosses it. The units trained at Camp Cheatham were the 1st
Tennessee Infantry, the 3rd Tennessee Infantry, and the 11th Tennessee.
Although these were the first units trained here, many other units were
trained here later, including some cavalry companies. One company of the
11th Tennessee was from Robertson County, the Washington Guards.

I found an article in "The Springfield Speculator" a newspaper found in the
verticle files in the Springfield, TN Library. It stated that Camp Cheatham
was located on Spring Creek at the Kinney Distillery. The Officers were
quartered in the distillery and the soldiers were camped on both sides of
the creek.

December 1 2003, 8:10 PM
Some of the mortally wounded of the 11th Tennessee Infantry were transported
by rail to Catoosa hospital and then buried in what is now the Confederate
cemetery at Griffin, Georgia. To my knowledge Nat Scholes is not buried
there. If he is, it is in an unmarked grave. Others were buried in what is
now the Confederate Cemetery at Forsythe, GA where there were several CS
hospitals. To my knowledge he is not at Forsythe either.
Response: The Scholes

Milton, Nathaniel, and John were my g-g-g uncles. It was passed down in my
family that when Milton buried Nat he attempted to go back after the war and
find the place where he buried his brother, but never did. I have framed in
my living room the stripes Milton tore from Nat's uniform as well as a CDV
(post war) of Milton. If any of you are able to locate Nat's remains please
let me know as well. My family would love to know.
Also, we were told Milton fought in Franklin, TN as well but was sent home
afterward to Waverly to get some shoes and come back, but got caught behind
enemy lines.

April 3 2003, 6:49 PM
Michael,
Thanks for your post. It's always good for us to go back and review
documents we first studied early in the project. William Gamblin Frazier
lived in the Coble community of Hickman County. He, like my ancestor Jerome
Spence, joined the cavalry after his days with the 11th TN Infantry, serving
in Napier's Battalion which later became part of the 10th TN Cavalry. The
same can be said for Eli Hornbeak and Thomas D. Thompson, who for many years
served as a physician at the Confederate Soldiers Home, which was located on
the grounds of the Hermitage here in Nashville. Several members of the 11th
are buried in the cemetery there. Thompson's early days with the 11th were
well documented in the Jerome Spence diary, parts of which will be included
in the book.
We had missed the first name of Huston Maroney (possibly Houston?), but I
will add the reference and check other sources to try and confirm the
spelling. If you have any photos of these men, please share them with us.
While we have more photographs of men in Company H than any of the other
companies of the 11th, any additional contributions are welcomed. Let me
hear from you on any ancestors in the Regiment.

Does any of your family research mention my 3rd gf William (aka Willie or
Willis) S. Jones? He served in Co. I of the 11th and died at Cumberland Gap
in late 1861. He lived "nest door" to your Spence ancestors on the 1860
census. He was a bootmaker and probably employed by or for by the Spence
Family. His wife was Margaret Ann Knight Jones of Humphreys Co.. I suspect
my Willie Jones was also a Humphreys Co native. I am seeking any info about

looking for clues but without success.

Seeking info on JIJ Adams

I am trying to get into The Sons of the Confederacy. I need information on
my ancestor,(JIJ Adams).
Response: J.I.J.
Adams Information
Dustin,
Sorry I didn't see your inquiry earlier. John Isaac Johnson Adams was indeed
a member of the 11th Tennessee, Company C. The information we have on him:
Born November 3, 1841. Enlisted May 14, 1861 at Nashville. Isued a Belgium
musket, later issued an Enfield rifle. Wounded in hand in the Battle of
Murfreesboro (Stones River) on December 31, 1862. Shot broke the index
finger and struck the left thumb. In hospital in Chattanooga April 22
through May 1, 1863. (Service Record ends)
He was listed as a deserter and denied a pension by the Confederate Pension
Board, but other members of the unit wrote compelling letters on his behalf.
One stated that he was on furlough (due to injury) while Captain McCauley of
Company C called him a model soldier. Adams himself wrote that the would
"rather his bones be bleaching on the battlefield of Stones River than die
with the charge (of deserter) and (have it) go down to succeeding
generations." He resided at Danielsville, Dickson County, TN. Buried in
Moore Cemetery, Houston County, TN. Pension application #S4073.
Hope this helps. We do not have a date of death on him - We do have a
photograph of him, but my partner has that.
E-mail me back to confirm you have received this and let me know if you have
the date of death or if you have ever seen the photograph.
